This is my scratch built Destroid Monster from the original Macross anime. I sculpted the entire model out of polymer clay with the exception of the 4 large cannons, which are recycled ballpoint pen casings. A little background on the Monster: Shoji Kawamori is one of my favourite mecha designers, and the HWR-00-MKII is, by far, my favourite mech from any Macross series. When I was a kid, I always felt that the Monster didn't get nearly enough love in the toy or plamo category... Yeah, I know, it was mostly relegated to set dressing in the background, but it had such screen presence when it was shown, and more than anything else on the the show, it looked like a real piece of military hardware from the near future. Big, clumsy, slow and devestating; Strange and non-anthropoid and devoid of ornamentation. Takatoku had their little diecast rendition, and Arii and Imai had several decent model kits, but they all suffered from having the hips locked in a very rigid pose... I hope that this version of mine captures some of the forced perspective look of the the anime: That awesome scene where the robot's 3-man crew power up in the cockpit, and the mech takes it's first step, warping and denting the metal deck of the Dedalus underfoot.
And here's the punchline: I worked on this sculpture for a little over a year. I'd take it out every few months, do a little work on it, and then put it away and forget about it. About a month before finishing it, I walked into a local model shop and randomly found one of the old Imai kits for 26 bucks. Not exorbitant, put not quite cheap either. I didn't buy it. Looking at my finished sculpted version, I am glad I built it from scratch as opposed to building a store bought model.
The pieces were sculpted in polymer clay, baked to hardness, and then holes of an appropriate diameter were drilled, and pieces of a wire coat hanger were inserted in the holes. Originally, the model was completely posable, but the limbs started to sag over time, so I started shoving cyanoacrylate in the holes.
